Major EU-OSHA Award for West Offaly Dairy Discussion Group

The West Offaly Dairy Discussion Group were one of ten groups to receive the European Occupational Safety and Health ‘Good Practice Awards’. The awards, announced on April 29th 2013, recognises innovative ways of implementing successful health and safety practices among SMEs across Europe.

The group of 15 farmers identified the need to reduce the hazards associated with dairy farming and to improve the standards of health and safety on their farms. The West Offaly Dairy Discussion Group used the Farm Safety Code of Practice Risk Assessment Tool in combination with monthly group discussions, to improve the levels of health and safety on their farms. The online Code of Practice Risk Assessment Document was developed as part of the Farm Safety Prevention Initiative operated by Teagasc and the Health and Safety Authority.

This award recognises the strong commitment made by this group of dairy farmers to improve the standards of health and safety on Irish farms. This commitment could pave the way for other farming groups to tackle reducing the hazards on farms across the country.
